NJ Prosecutor in Hot Water!
Proper Use of Grammer: Persecute the Prosecutor?

Summary of article from New York Daily News, November 29, 1994
Posted to FEAR-List by John Paff, December 2, 1994

It's like a well-constructed play - the Somerset, N.J. prosecutor who's weighing whether to bring charges against actor Kelsey Grammer (my note - Frasier) may himself have a few claims leveled his way.

Nicholas Bissell Jr., who recently interviewed the 17-year-old Arizona girl who allegedly had sex with Grammer at the Somerset Hills Hotel in June 1993, could be the subject of indictments resulting from a federal investigation of a forfeiture program (the seizing of assets in criminal cases) he's in charge of. There is an ongoing investigation of the handling of the funds.

Because of this, there is speculation whether Bissell, whose second five-year term expired in 1993, will be reappointed. According to reports, Bissell's also been named in three civil lawsuits stemming from forfeiture cases. In one case Bissell was dropped as a defendant and in another, the suit itself was dismissed. The third, in which Bissell is accused of civil rights violation by a former drug defendant, is set to hit the U.S. District Court in January.

As to what Bissell will do with Grammer and with himself - after fending off rumors and allegations - we can't tell you. We weren't able to reach him for comment, but he did tell Somerset Courier News reporter Steve Pilkington; `If anybody's going to be indicted, I know it's not going to be me... nobody here has done anything.'

Not unusual for a prosecutor's office, actually."
