16 charged in thefts of drugs, guns, money seized from crime suspects
MEMPHIS — The theft of drugs, guns and money seized from crime suspects
in Memphis may have been going on for years, records indicate.
Federal indictments issued this week charge 16 people with involvement in
those thefts and the distribution of cocaine.
Those charged include two civilian employees and a former employee of the
Memphis Police Department.
The employees worked in the police ''property room,'' where confiscated
goods and evidence held for criminal trials are stored.
The sealed indictments were made public Tuesday when police announced that
they were rounding up suspects and seizing expensive cars and luxury homes
in Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia.
More then $1 million in cash was seized from the residence and car of one
suspect.

One audit noted ''severe storage and overcrowding problems.'' Auditors said
cash, guns and narcotics were not removed from the property room on a
timely basis and marijuana was found on the floor, The Commercial Appeal
reported yesterday.
The indictments say the thefts are linked to a cocaine-dealing ring, but
authorities refused to discuss how they are related.
