Editorial: Dirty money comes clean
Who says crime doesn't pay?It does in Texas County in the Oklahoma
Panhandle..
Texas County Sheriff Arnold Peoples has not used taxpayer money to buy law
enforcement vehicles since 1990.
Taxpayers footed the bill for very little of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol
headquarters in Guymon, Okla.
Did Oklahoma law enforcement officials win the Texas lottery?
Nope, they have just been doing their jobs.
A recent article in The Daily Oklahoman revealed Texas County has raked in
$647,876 this year from criminals attempting to traffic illegal drugs and
related money through the Oklahoma Panhandle.
This dirty money has been put to good use, all according to state law.
Money that is determined to have been used in illegal drug trafficking can
be allocated for expenditures such as drug enforcement at the discretion of
law enforcement officers and the district attorney.
In other words, the ill-gotten financial gains of criminals can be used to
fund initiatives aimed at nabbing more of them.
The irony is beautiful.
While it is a bit unsettling that such large amounts of illegal money
routinely travels along local highways, at least it is satisfying to know a
significant chunk of it is being put to good use.
