Only in the "Land of the Free" can we enjoy such freedoms as this. Your
turn is coming next. Enjoy your slavery... (her house was sold for $80,000
to settle an alleged $27,000 tax debt and the city pocketed the
difference.)

BIDDEFORD -- A tactical team seized at least a half dozen loaded guns and a
thousand rounds of ammunition from the home of Dorothy Lafortune when they
moved in Wednesday to evict her from her home on Graham Street, police
said.

Lafortune had refused to leave her home since Friday despite a court order
to get out. City officials had seized her home and sold it at auction
earlier this year after she refused to pay $27,000 in back taxes.

After an Alabama-based citizens' militia threatened to come to Maine and
use force if necessary to defend Lafortune, the situation intensified. For
five days, neighbors waited for something to happen while police urged
everyone to be patient. Administrators at a nearby school cancelled classes
out of concern for students' safety.

The tactical team moved in just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators
knew that Lafortune was scheduled to appear in court on an unrelated matter
on Wednesday and would likely come out of her house, News 8 WMTW's Jim Cyr
reported. They were right.

One of her neighbors told NewsRadio WMTW's Dick Gosselin that she was
startled by a big boom.

"I thought it might be a truck backfiring," Lil Whitney said, adding that
when she realized police were moving in, she grabbed her camera and ran
outside.

By the time she got out there, Lafortune was gone and a man was being
loaded into an ambulance. Onlookers said Lafortune was taken out in
handcuffs, according to Whitney.

Lafortune made a brief court appearance on a charge of trespassing, Cyr
reported. She was released on her own recognizance but ordered to stay away
from Graham Street and not to possess any guns.
