Inspectors seize 756 pounds of bologna
Pickup carrying banned lunch meat caught at bridge

Federal agricultural quarantine inspector Charles Payne on Friday sliced
bologna that was seized at the Paso del Norte Bridge. U.S. Customs and
Border Protection officers found 81 rolls of it under blankets in a pickup,
with children sitting on top of the contraband.
The smuggling of drugs, people and counterfeit goods is a
multimillion-dollar industry in El Paso, but border inspectors Friday made
a seizure of other contraband that's also taken quite seriously -- bologna.
A bologna-smuggling attempt was stopped about 2:30 p.m., when inspectors at
the Paso del Norte Bridge found that children in the back seat of an
extended-cab pickup were sitting on 756 pounds of lunch meat, officials
said.
The rear seat was removed from the Chevrolet S10 pickup, and rolls of
Mexican bologna were found stacked, taped together and covered with
blankets, said Roger Maier, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman.
"It would appear (the children) were sitting on a bench, when in fact the
bench was made up of 81 of these tubes of bologna," Maier said.
No arrests were made in the case, but authorities seized the truck and , , ,
