Traffic stop nets a cool $5.3 million

A truckload of frozen dinner rolls produced a different kind of bread this
week — $5.3 million in cash — after suspicious Texas Department of
Public Safety troopers searched the vehicle near Alice.
"It's the largest cash seizure ever made in a DPS traffic stop," said
Corpus Christi-based DPS Capt. David Doyle.
. . .
The cash was brought to Austin, where it took 12 hours to count it by hand.
The final tally of $5,301,920 easily eclipsed the previous record of $3.2
million seized last year in nearby San Patricio County, Doyle said.
One of the three men riding in the truck has been charged with a money
laundering offense, and all three remain in custody. Their names haven't
been released, Doyle said.
. . .
Although officials declined to characterize the cash as proceeds from
criminal activity, U.S. 281 is a heavily used route for drug traffickers
returning cash to Mexico.
If the money is proven related to criminal activity, or if no one claims
it, a court could order its forfeiture.
