I must disagree with that venerable head.  Power does not corrupt - it only

reveals hidden but pre-existing character flaws.

"Law Enforcement" has become a running case study in the unfitness of 
modern man to rule over his fellows.  It is our selection criteria that are

at fault - the standards which are applied by voters in choosing 
representatives (who appoint appoint our District Attorneys and our Police 
Chiefs, who then hire their underlings.)

Imagine democracy brought to a 4th grade classroom, and the teacher elected

from the student populace.  Chaos would be guaranteed, because the 
electorate itself would be unworthy of the power granted them.
